With a population of approximately 9,500 residents, River Vale Township is located in Bergen County, New Jersey. The township has an area of approximately 4.3 square miles and is bordered by other Bergen County municipalities, as well as rivers and streams. River Vale Township is conveniently located near numerous major roadways, and residents enjoy fast commutes throughout New Jersey and neighboring New York.
 
Several Bergen County municipalities border River Vale Township, including Montvale, Park Ridge, Woodcliff Lake, Hillsdale, Westwood, Emerson, Harrington Park and Old Tappan. With close proximity to so many towns and boroughs, River Vale residents enjoy the best entertainment, dining and recreation opportunities that Bergen County has to offer. The Hackensack River runs through the eastern part of the township, and the northern border is located on the edge of the New Jersey / New York State border. This provides fast and easy access to New York City’s world-renowned cultural activities, as well as the rest of New York State.
 
River Vale Township has an interesting history, and has technically been a part of several neighboring municipalities at different points in history. In the late 1800’s, the area that is now River Vale was part of Harrington Township. River Vale was officially incorporated as a Bergen County Township is 1906, and was formed from sections of neighboring Hillsdale and Washington Township. In July of 1929, the whole area became part of the neighboring town of Park Ridge.

The River Vale Public School District serves students in Kindergarten through eighth grade. The district operates two elementary schools and one middle school, and high school students attend nearby Pasack Valley High School in Hillsdale.
