Area Guide / Northern New Jersey / Bergen / Leonia

Town:Leonia

The Borough of Leonia is located in Bergen County near the George Washington Bridge. The borough is one square mile in area and housing options include single-family houses, condominiums, townhouses, multi-family units and apartments. The New York City skyline is visible from most points in town, and some homes for sale in Leonia offer partial views of the city. As the borough is so close to Manhattan, there are a variety of commuting options for residents who work in the city.

Leonia was established as an artist colony in the late 1800’s, and in its early years lured many professors from Columbia University to move here, as well. This history is reflected today, as Leonia is home to the Players Guild of Leonia, one of the oldest theatre guilds in the United States, with continuous performances since 1919. Due to a large number of academics and artists of all kinds, Leonia is often referred to as “The Athens of New Jersey”.

Downtown Leonia is centered on the intersection of Broad Avenue and Fort Lee Road. One can find restaurants, coffee houses, grocers, pharmacies, independent shops, and banks all located within a few blocks. Outside of downtown, Leonia has five recreational areas free to residents. The Leonia pool is the only recreation facility that requires membership.

With its views of New York City, interesting history and large availability of cultural activities, residents of Leonia enjoy a high quality of life and convenient location, making this borough a popular choice for those looking for homes for sale in Bergen County.
